Pinal County, Arizona
Located in the central portion of Arizona, Pinal County was created from the neighboring Maricopa and Pima counties. It is the third most populous county in Arizona and in 2022 it had a population of 433,338 people. Pinal County was named after the Pinal Peak and was created on February 1, 1875. The Superior Courts, Justice of the Peace Courts, and Municipal Courts function within various aspects
The Superior Courts handle the majority of the cases in the county which include civil, criminal, family law, conservatorship, guardianship, and juvenile proceedings. The locations of the Superior Courts are Florence, Apache Junction, Maricopa, and Casa Grande. The Superior Court has a Teens Court and several programs for juveniles to foster a crime-free future, instill self-confidence, and restore victims to society. Juveniles serve as a jury for their peers in this court. The Justice of the Peace Courts adjudicate civil actions, misdemeanors, traffic (criminal and civil), eviction, and petty offenses, settle small claims, and issue protection orders. They are divided into precincts (1-6) and cases decided in Justice Courts can be appealed to Superior Courts except for small claims cases. They are located in San Tan, Casa Grande, Coolidge, Maricopa, Superior, and Apache Junction. The Municipal Courts hear criminal misdemeanors and ordinance violation cases with a particular jurisdiction. They also issue orders of protection and injunction over harassment. Some of the Municipal Courts are Eloy Municipal Court, Casa Grande City Municipal Court, Kearny Municipal Court, and Coolidge Municipal Court.
From the Arizona 2022 judicial data report, there were a total of 186,745 filed statewide in Superior Courts and approximately 183,000 terminated. However, in Pinal County, 9,742 cases were filed in the Superior Courts. In the Justice Courts, 596,649 cases were filed in all counties in Arizona, Pinal County (39,364), and 600,180 cases were terminated in fiscal year 2022. In addition, Municipal Courts worked on 718,609 case filings, and 690,000 cases were terminated in the state. The public can view court records on the public access case lookup service on the Arizona Judicial Branch website. The Clerk of Superior Court is the elected constitutional officer in charge of record keeping. Examples of certain case types that are excluded from reaching the public are probate cases, cases involving orders of protection, mental health, victim and witness data, and juvenile incorrigible/delinquency cases.
Pinal County has invested fully in the technological means of transmitting court proceedings between the court staff, defendants, and plaintiffs. Minors are treated with utmost care and made to go through rehabilitation in treatment courts to make them fit for society again. The Superior Courts, Justice of the Peace Courts, and Municipal Courts all strive to make justice accessible to everyone.
