Yavapai County, Arizona

Yavapai County was created in 1864 and named after the Yavapai People. With a population of almost a quarter of a million, Yavapai is the fourth-most populous county in Arizona, and its land area of 8,123 square miles makes it the seventh-largest county in the state. Its county seat is Prescott, while Prescott Valley is its largest city. The Yavapai County court system comprises superior, justice, and municipal courts. These courts are integral to maintaining law and order in the county as they manage various legal affairs, including family, probate, and criminal and civil proceedings.

The Yavapai County Superior Court in Prescott and Camp Verde is the highest in the county, and it handles cases beyond the jurisdiction of other courts. It hears felonies, some misdemeanors, and civil cases with claims exceeding $10,000. It also hears probate matters, divorces, annulments, real property disputes, and legal separation cases. It also has a Juvenile Court that deals with juvenile matters; including delinquency, truancy, and dependency. Justice Courts in Yavapai County hear civil cases with claims under $10,000, misdemeanors, landlord-tenant disputes, domestic violence, and preliminary felony hearings. There are Justice Courts in Bagdad, Mayer, Prescott, Verde Valley, Yarnell, and Seligman. Municipal Courts in Yavapai County handle traffic offenses, search warrants, protective orders, and municipal ordinance violations. The following cities/towns have Municipal Courts serving their municipal jurisdiction: Chino Valley, Camp Verde, Clarkdale, Cottonwood, Prescott, Dewey-Humbolt, Prescott Valley, and Sedona.

The Yavapai County crime rate is about 1,611 crimes per 100,000 residents. The Yavapai County Superior Court handles an average of 7,000 cases, the Justice courts handle around 36,000 cases, and the Juvenile Court hears about 1,000 cases annually. Clerks of respective courts are responsible for public court records in the county. Members of the public can visit any of the county's courts to view or request nonconfidential court records. They can also view Yavapai County public court records from the Yavapai County Portal. The following court records in Yavapai County are sealed to protect sensitive information and preserve privacy and can only be unsealed by court orders:

  • Most juvenile records
  • Identifying information about jurors
  • Grand jury proceedings and records
  • Medical and mental health records
  • Personally identifiable information such as license plate number, social security number, and driver's license number
